Are Hashtags Still Worth Using?
Hashtags, once a cornerstone of social media engagement, have long been a topic of debate—especially after Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, clarified that they no longer boost visibility on the platform. While hashtags may have been a valuable tool in the past, their relevance has dwindled significantly.
In their early days, hashtags served an important function—helping users categorize content and easily find related topics. They made it easier to join conversations on social media without the need for laborious searching. Introduced in 2007 by blogger Chris Messina, hashtags initially gained popularity on Twitter and quickly spread to other platforms like Tumblr, Facebook, and Instagram. On Instagram, they became a trend in their own right, with personalized hashtags for events, celebrity relationships, and weddings becoming a momentary symbol of aspiration.
However, as social media grew, the overuse of hashtags became overwhelming. Instagram posts filled with dozens of hashtags, many of which were irrelevant or humorous, became the norm. But that era has passed, and today, content creators and marketing experts agree that hashtags play a minor role in boosting reach—especially on Instagram. Based on our experience across hundreds of accounts and hundreds of thousands of posts, posts with or without hashtags show little difference in engagement, reflecting a shift toward more meaningful content and user interactions.
In 2024, social media platforms rely more heavily on AI-driven algorithms that tailor content based on user behavior and engagement, rendering hashtags nearly obsolete. While they aren’t entirely dead, their impact on expanding reach is minimal, and their relevance continues to fade as digital algorithms become increasingly sophisticated. Hashtags, once a revolutionary tool, now seem like a relic from a simpler time on the internet.
